I have a terrible FireTV in my guest room. If I let it be online it downloads 20+ GB of ads per week, despite no one turning the screen on. So I am going to dumb it down to a simple HDMI monitor and install my own media system
I’d take thoughts on jailbreaks or hardware hacks for TVs with baked-in FireTV junk. I would likely prefer an external computer to running my own software on the (slow) internal hardware, but hacking the TV to never start FireTV nonsense and/or auto-select the right input would be great
I’d also take thoughts on how to build an interface that is easy for first-time users to navigate Plex and Netflix/browser-streaming and maybe like a game console emulator. Bonus points if I can integrate some Home Assistant controls into the on-screen display
My main home media system can have a complicated interface that does all the things, but I want to the guest system to feel easy to use for people who get no training or experience
